August Senior News Asks, What’s in Your Attic?

Oct 21, 2023

Press release from Senior News. (It’s been around in Humboldt County since 1981.):

Dust bunnies, unidentified boxes, holiday ornaments, a broken lamp shade attics and storage areas can be wonderous and frightening places.

Not that it’s any of our business, but the August issue of Senior News wonders, “What’s in Your Attic?” Some of the answers our writers sent in may surprise you.

Editor Ted Pease flashed on the tag line from an old TV show: “There are 8 million stories in the naked city.” He writes, “Our attic has at least twice that — not counting the boxes crammed with snapshots (everyone knows a picture is worth 1,000 words)” page 2.

On Page 1, Bill Peer says there’s not much besides a furnace and dead mice in his attic. But the backyard shed is another story. “Maybe it’s time for a yard sale,” he muses.

If it’s not the stuff up in the attic, look under the bed for real treasures, advises Peter Pennekamp, which is where he found priceless secrets of his parents. Peter pushes back on the urge to clean up before we die, because “allowing your children to sort through the papers and mementos of your past can have enormous meaning to them” page 3.

Senior News, of course, is the monthly community newspaper of Humboldt Senior Resource Center in Eureka, circulating 10,000 copies by subscription and free at businesses all over Humboldt County. The E-edition is available at humsenior.org under the Senior News tab, and we’re inserted in the Times-Standard and Mad River Union as well.

Read about Polly McCutcheon’s dolls (page 4), Bob Felter’s mother’s silver spoons (page 15), Bonnie Mesinger’s “Breadcrumbs” (page 7), Dave Rosso’s old love letters (page 18) and more in this month’s issue of Senior News.
